About
dolphins in Zanzibar
Dolphins are wondrous creatures. A special bond exists between humans and
dolphins, a unique relationship that extends beyond conventional methods
of communication and transcends human tendencies to seek
out members of the same species. Their behaviour is some time amazing: it
happened that a dolphin shepherd a woman back to the boat after he detected
the second heartbeat !
In Zanzibar you can meet both bottlenose dolphins and humpback dolphins
anyway bottlenose dolphins are
most commonly sighted. These are well known for their playful and carefree
nature while humpback dolphins do not tend to approach as close as the Bottlenose.
The contact with humans, during interaction sessions, depends on the free
will of the dolphins.
Their choice to approach guided groups of snorkelers or divers is not based
on any reinforcement.
Divers and snorkelers are not allowed to feed them: it is worth mentioning
that the dolphins continuously develop an even stronger connection with
humans based only on curiosity and on a playfull and spontaneous interaction.
Dolphins hunt in groups and herd schools of fish toward shore for feeding.
That's the best moment of the day to go for a swimm with them and to observe
the social hierarchy occuring in their interactions.
They feed on a variety of fish, cephalopods (such as squid and octopus)
and other sea life.
They use echolocation (bouncing sound off of objects to determine their
location) to hunt and high-pitched clicks to stun their prey.
